    Sugar Jones, Benja'a. Ward & John Gibbs are appointed patrollers according to Law from Fishing Creek to the Extent of the County "outwards and upwards & be sworn before a Magist."

    'Geo. Hazelwood, Jacob Williams, & Micajah Perry apointed [sic] patrollers accord. to Law from Fishing Creek to Roanoke from the lower Line & up to the Extent of the county, to be first Sworn." [First patrollers named on records.]

    At a Court held at theCourt house the 18trh day of June 1753.

    Pursuant to the Act of Assembly concerning Servants & Slaves before James Payne, Samuel Henderson, Robert Harris, John Bratley Esq's, Justices of the said County, and Philemon Hawkins, Sugar Jones, John Hawkins, & Robert Abernathy Gents Freeholders of the County of Granville & owners of negro slaves within the same, for the Trial of Peter a Negro man slave belonging to West Harris Esq'r. for the Murder of Will a Negro man Salve belonging to the said West Harris.

    The Court being Sworn according to Law, & the said Negro Peter being led to the Barr & arraigned pleads that he is Guilty tho's not wilful, whereupon the witness being Examined & the prisoners Defense heard the Court are of opinion that the said Peter be Branded with a hot Iron on the forehead thus + that his Ears be Nail'd to the pillory & crop'd & that he receive thirty nine lashes on his bare Back well laid on, & thqt he then be Discharged, his Owner paying all fees, & that the same be put in immediate Execution.

    Brunswick County, Virginia:

    TO ALL PEOPLE to whom this present writing shall come I, Thomas Washington of Brunswick County for the love & respect I bear to my brother Gray Washington I give grant and dispose in plain & open markett [sic] all that Tract & parcel of Land & premises lying and being in the County of Brunswick on the Waters of Pea hill Creek adjoining the Lands of James Read, Hartwell Marrable, Betsy Jones the wife of Sugar Jones which was called Chinch's Land, and the Lands of William Holloway & then bounded by Pea hill Creek opposite to the Lands of William Huskey, William Jones, James Fletcher & Colonal [sic] William Brown containing by estimation four hundred & fourteen acres be the same more or less. Also the following Negroes (Viz.) Jacob, Tab, Marindy, David, Fanny, Randle, Cheketer, Daniel, Simon, Isaac, Iris . . . do use and dispose of his and their will & pleasure,k as of his & their own property whithout [sic] any manner of challenge, cleam or demand of me the said Thomas Washington . . . I have hereunto set my hand & Seal this 23d Day of July, in the year of our Lord 1785.

    WILL of SUGAR JONES
    Granville County, North Carolina

    In The name of God Amen I Sugar Jones of Granville County, in North Carolina being of Sound And Perfect Mind and Memory raised to Almighty God doe Make & Ordain this to be my Last Will & Testament following ~~~

    Imprimis my Soul I Recommend into the Hands of Almighty God that Gave it & my Body to be Deceently Buryed at the Descretion of my Executors And as for the Worldly Goods and Estate which it Hath Pleased God to BEstow upon me in this LIfe my Debts & Funeral Expense Being first paid. I Give Devise and Dispose of the Same In Manner and form as followeth

    Item. I Give and Bequeath illegible My Son Edmund Jones all my lands that Lie on the west Side of Linches Creek and All my part of the Stock On my plantation at Lynches Creek And Also my Underwood Mare & fold [sic] And one Negroe Woman Named Lucy & her five Children to him and his Heirs for Ever.

    Item. I Give and Bequeath all the Remainders of my Lands not Before Given to be Equally Divided Quantity and quallity Between my three Sons Drewry Samuel & James to them and their Heirs for Ever . . . four lines marked out

    Item. I give and Bequeath unto my Daughter Nanny One Negro Girl Named Rose ~~~~~

    I give & Bequeath unto my Daughter Molly One Negroe Girl Named Sall ~~~~~~

    Item. I give and Bequeath unto my Son Drewry One Negroe Boy Named Bob ~~~~~~

    Item. I Give and Bequeath unto my Son James One Negro Girl named fillis. ~~~~~~ One line seems to have been lost.

    Item. I Give and Bequeath to the Child that my Wife is Now Big with One Negroe Girl Not Exceeding the Agbe of Sixteen years to be Purchased Out of the Income of my Estate.

    My Will is that my young Horse Spanker & my Underwood fille Be Sold & the money Apply to the use of my Children. Also my Wish & Desire is that if the Child that my wife is Now Big with Should be a boy that then There be A Piece of Land bought at the Discretion of my Executors for the sd. Child.

    Item. I give and Bequeath all the Residue & Remainder of my Estate To my Loving Wife for & During her Natural Life & No Longer Then to be Equally Divided Amongst my children (to wit) Drewry Samuel & James Nanny & Molley if the Child my wife is now Big with to whom I give the same.

    And I Do make & Ordain my Loving Wife my Executors and Gideon Macon & Adrin Mclemore my Execuors of this my Last will and Testament Bearing Date this 15th Day of July 1761.

    This Will was duly Proved by the Oath of Solomon Alston Junr. one of the subscribing Witness thereto, that the Widow of the Testator Execx together with Gideon Mason & Adtrin McLemore Executors therein name d Qualified as such which was Ordered to be Certified.
