    Text The Mattaponi River takes its name from the tribe of Native Americans that lived along its banks when the English settled the Jamestown colony in 1607. ----- James Taylor held many land patents. In 1671 he owned 1,650 acres of land along the Mattaponi River. His home was called "Hare Forest", eight miles south of Bolling Green, Caroline Co., Virginia. --- On October 20, 1704, James Taylor Jr, Thomas Petit, John Baylor, Robert Powell and John Stone patented 4500 acres in King & Queen Co., VA, on the north side of the Mattaponi River
