Inherited his estate from his father.
He was recommended as a fit and proper person for the office of
Colonel of the 12th Regiment, 3rd Brigade, 2nd Division, Virginia Militia, in 1826/2.7 He represented his district
in the Virginia State Legislature for twenty-one years. Judging from known dates, we surmise that his military
career began sometime between 1811 and 1816, and that he became a district representative to the Virginia
Legislature about 1817. One record stated that he served as a captain in the War of 1812 (1812-1815).

This author has concluded that Gideon must have fought with Zachary Taylor (1784-1850), 12th President of the United States, because Taylor is the only person whose background could satisfy all these criteria. Gideon‟s abilities in French would have served him well d uring the Black Hawk War (1832), led by „Old Rough
and Ready‟ Taylor, along the Mississippi , in a region of Illinois and Wisconsin inhabited by French frontiersmen and fur trappers.

John Bouie Strange was promoted as First Adjutant of a corps of cadets, and became that institution’s third graduate, in its first graduating class of 1842. During his schooling at VA Military Institute, Bowie was the first cadet to be assigned to guard the Lexington Arsenal, and thus came to be known as the “First Sentinel.‟ The tradition of selecting the “First Se ntinel‟ survives to this day, and freshmen at the Institute vie for the honor of this appointment.t.

building railroads, Edward settled in Birmingham, AL, and founded the Tutwiler Coal, Coke and Iron
Company. He married first, Mary Jeffrey of Crittendon, KY, and had three children named Temple Wilson
Tutwiler, Edward Magruder Tutwiler, and Herbert Tutwiler.

State Senate, under the Honorable John L. Mayre, Lieutenant
Governor and President of the Senate. He was later appointed as
page by the Honorable R.E. Withers, Lieutenant Governor, who
later became a United States Senator.
W.T.‟s health had become impaired, so he spent considerable time after leaving college at certain springs
and health spas in Virginia, while being tutored in Greek and Latin by a graduate of the University of Virginia.
With tuition provided by „Curry & Davis‟ he completed law courses at Richmond Law College in 1876 and
1877. He entered the University of Virginia in 1878, and graduated in 1880.
During the fall of 1880 he moved to Dallas, where he worked for the law firm of Crawford & Crawford
for three years. He became one of four candidates for the position of County Judge in 1884, but lost election
by a slim margin. He ran for City Attorney in 1886, but lost that election as well, by a margin of only thirtyeight
votes. Having failed to establish himself in a political position, he continued his private practice as a
lawyer and member of the Dallas Bar Association.91 He was made Chairman of the Congressional Campaign
Committee of the Sixth District in Texas in 1897.92
