4. | Col. Gideon Alloway Strange, I - of Dog Point was born 7 Mar 1793 (son of John Alloway of Fluvanna, Oak Hill Strange, IV and Mildred Ann “Milly” Barnett); died 23 Feb 1838, Private Cemetary Rock Rest Cemetery, Dog Point, Fluvanna, VA. Notes:
Alloway of Dog Point
Inherited his estate from his father.
He was recommended as a fit and proper person for the office of
Colonel of the 12th Regiment, 3rd Brigade, 2nd Division, Virginia Militia, in 1826/2.7 He represented his district
in the Virginia State Legislature for twenty-one years. Judging from known dates, we surmise that his military
career began sometime between 1811 and 1816, and that he became a district representative to the Virginia
Legislature about 1817. One record stated that he served as a captain in the War of 1812 (1812-1815).
Member of the House of Delegates (M.H.D.), Virginia.
This author has concluded that Gideon must have fought with Zachary Taylor (1784-1850), 12th President of the United States, because Taylor is the only person whose background could satisfy all these criteria. Gideon‟s abilities in French would have served him well d uring the Black Hawk War (1832), led by „Old Rough
and Ready‟ Taylor, along the Mississippi , in a region of Illinois and Wisconsin inhabited by French frontiersmen and fur trappers.
Gideon married Harriet Magruder 23 Apr 1816, Fluvanna, VA. Harriet died 1829. [Group Sheet]
